National Walgreens Partnership Brings More than $120,000 to Northeast Ohio

Since 2013, Susan G. Komen National and Walgreens have worked together to achieve our mission of ending breast cancer forever. Over the past two years, Walgreens has raised over $15 million for Susan G. Komen by asking their customers to donate a dollar or more at the cash register. This partnership has resulted in an expansion of Komen National’s reach and supports the growth of Komen Affiliate’s community health work.

The monies raised through the Walgreens point-of-sale fundraiser have gone on to help women across the country in a very direct way while also making a long-term impact. These funds provide full support for the operation of the Komen National Helpline (1-877-GO KOMEN), as well as financing for Komen National’s National Treatment Assistance Program. Additionally, Komen National put the call out to Affiliate’s across the country for grant proposals to support local programming focused on educating women and closing the gap on breast health disparities in local communities.

Komen Northeast Ohio has been chosen to receive two grants from Komen National for local programs focused on increasing knowledge around breast health and breast cancer issues to empower individuals to make informed breast health decisions. The first grant, totaling more than $50,000, was awarded to Columbiana County Health Department to support their on-the-ground, grassroots education of more than 700 low-income, uninsured women living in the Tri-County area. The second grant award provides Komen Northeast Ohio with more than $70,000 to address the breast health education needs at the community and professional levels in Mahoning County with a focus on the greater Youngstown area. This program hopes to reach more than 200 low-income, uninsured, minority community members and 50 breast health providers to increase breast cancer screening rates among the African-American populations in Mahoning County.

Without the support of the funds raised by Walgreens, these programs would not have been possible. Komen Northeast Ohio sincerely thanks Walgreens and their customers for giving back and making a difference in the fight against breast cancer.
