Applying for Direct Service Funding

The promise of Susan G. Komen® is to save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer. Up to 75% of the net proceeds raised by Komen Northeast Ohio each year stay in Northeast Ohio. Most of the funds raised are awarded to local organizations that provide breast health outreach, screening/diagnostic, navigation, and support programs targeted to communities and populations most in-need of services. The remaining 25% of the net proceeds support Komen National’s Research, Evaluation and Scientific Program.

For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2020, Komen Northeast Ohio invested approximately $200,000 in five local community programs. Komen Northeast Ohio funds innovative, evidence-based projects focused on addressing the priorities identified in Komen Northeast Ohio’s most recent Community Profile.

Komen funded programs provide breast health/cancer screening and diagnosis, navigation, and patient/survivor support services not otherwise available to medically underserved populations in the highest need areas in Northeast Ohio, which includes: Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Lorain, Harrison/Jefferson, and Mahoning Counties.

Funding Priorities

Komen Northeast Ohio will only consider funding for organizations/institutions that definitively respond to our grant funding priorities and provide a seamless and logical progression through the continuum of care for individuals up to 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) in our targeted Communities of Interest. Click here for more information. Funded organizations must also utilize evidence-based strategies as outlined in the Komen Northeast Ohio 2015 Community Profile report.

The Letter of Intent

Komen Northeast Ohio invests the majority of donor funds in nonprofit organizations through our direct services funding. Selected organizations meeting our specific funding criteria are invited to apply for direct services funding through a Letter of Intent (LOI) process. The LOI is distributed to select applicants who provide extensive and complete services within the identified highest need communities. LOIs via invitation only is essential to making sure our donor dollars are invested into programs that can help us achieve our Big Bold Goal of reducing breast cancer deaths by 50% by 2026. The Affiliate conducts in-depth program assessments to identify potential applicants who can provide a seamless transition from education to treatment for low-income and underserved individuals.
