Survivors Helping Other Women Survive
Project Title: SHOWS
Amount Funded: $2,500
Project Description: Survivors Helping Other Women Survive/SHOWS has a proactive and culturally tailored program that offers patient navigation, peer-to-peer education, group education and utilization of non-traditional settings such as AA churches to help raise awareness. ‘Edutainment’, entertainment that educates, comes in the form of plays written by AA survivors followed by in-depth information on breast health, breast cancer, the importance of early detection, survivorship support and screenings for improved survival rates. Partners from hospitals, community outreach organizations and BCCP are present at each event to increase awareness, provide access to screening and decrease barriers to quality care.

Project Title: Minority Women Breast Cancer Awareness
Amount Funded: $2,500
Project Description: Minority Women Breast Cancer Awareness Project will serve the African American women, low-income, underinsured, and uninsured and/or working poor in Ashtabula County. The project will consist of a six-part health education session with focus on culturally appropriate breast health, breast cancer awareness, risk factors and prevention- focusing on healthy diet, exercise, smoking cessation, alcohol consumption; and focus on early detection. The sessions will be lead by supporting UH staff. At the conclusion of the sixth session, scheduling a screening mammogram will be available. A nurse navigator will coordinate the events, schedule mammograms, qualify women who are uninsured for a free mammogram thru the UHGMC Underserved Women’s Project Community Fund, arrange transportation and provide continuation of care if further testing is needed. 50 individuals will be served. This project will result in an increased knowledge for early detection and available resources.
