SUSAN G. KOMEN® NORTHEAST OHIO ANNOUNCES VIRTUAL 2020 MORE THAN PINK WALKS IN CLEVELAND AND AKRON

Decision Prioritizes and Protects Participants’ Health and Safety During COVID-19

[CLEVELAND} – July 15, 2020 – Susan G. Komen® Northeast Ohio announced today the 2020 Cleveland and Akron MORE THAN PINK Walks will be held virtually this year. The Cleveland Walk will still take place on August 15 and the Akron Walk will still take place on October 3; however, the events will now take place online with a live-streamed Opening Ceremony and video presentation on Komen Northeast Ohio’s Facebook page, presented in partnership with Cleveland 19 News, followed by a call to our participants to “Walk Where They Are.”

“As an organization dedicated to saving lives, it is so important to protect the health of our participants, many of whom are breast cancer survivors or are currently in treatment for the disease. Therefore, we will be leveraging technology this year to ensure we can walk together – even if we can’t be together – because breast cancer is not cancelled,” stated Sean Shacklett, Executive Director for Komen Northeast Ohio.

Komen noted that the Northeast Ohio MORE THAN PINK Walk series serves two purposes – it is an important fundraiser that fuels Komen’s breast cancer research and patient support efforts, and it provides all those touched by breast cancer a sense of being a part of a larger compassionate community committed to making a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

“We believe we can preserve that sense of community through this new virtual fundraising Walk, even though we will be walking where we are,” said Mr. Shacklett. “The added benefit of this new virtual experience is that people who previously couldn’t attend in-person due to their health or scheduling conflicts will now be able to participate and be part of the community of hope.”

Each Walk will have a week full of online activities and giveaways leading up to the Walk date to get participants involved and active in the larger community. Registered participants who fundraise at least $100 and those who register as a survivor or metastatic patient will have multiple opportunities to pick up their Walk t-shirts the week leading up to the Walk date. Komen Northeast Ohio also has free yard signs available for those who want them to get their neighbors involved and ready to Walk on August 15 and October 3. Starting on July 15, there will be no fee to register for the virtual fundraising event this year or to access the online fundraising tools. Any registration fees made prior to this transition will now count towards the participant’s personal or team fundraising goal.
